Mia Johnson
MA, LCMHCA, NCC

I view counseling as an opportunity for self-exploration, growth, and healing. My top priority is to build a
trusting relationship while creating a space where clients feel safe, respected and heard. I use an
integrative approach, drawing predominately from Person-Centered modalities and techniques while utilizing Trauma Invested/Informed Therapy, Child-Centered Play Therapy, and Child Parent Relationship
Training (CPRT). I truly believe that every client is unique, varying in strengths, struggles, and personalities. Therefore, I tailor each treatment plan to meet each client where they are, in the present moment.

When working with young children, I utilize a Child-Centered Play Therapy approach. Even small children can experience big feelings. Your child may not have the words to express feeling over-stimulated, afraid, tired, or frustrated so they use the method most readily available to them to demonstrate and communicate their internal state. In play therapy, the child uses toys to expand their communication
options. In addition, some children have experienced traumas that are literally, unspeakable. Providing them with an alternate way to process their pain and internal struggles without the use of words allows the child to access a deeper level of awareness and healing, in a way that talk therapy cannot.

My background consists mostly of being in the school system, ranging from an Exceptional Children’s
Teacher Assistant to a Student Support Counselor. Although the titles appear different, my natural approach has remained the same: making connections and building relationships with my students to implement strategies that foster a safe and healthy learning environment. I'm passionate when it comes to working in a collaborative team which includes the child's school and home environment. It truly takes a village and I am intentional in modeling appropriate practices and equipping teachers and caregivers with the skills needed to best support you and your child.

In 2014, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a Concentration in Child Development at the
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I later graduated from the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte received a Master’s Degree in Counseling with a focus on Clinical Mental Health and a
concentration in Play Therapy.

I am looking forward to hearing from you in hopes of beginning a relationship that fosters growth, trust,
and grace.
